As a family goes through the cycles of life, there are
moments when it is time to pause for a special occasion. Sometimes the
occasion may be happy… sometimes one of great sadness. Whatever the
reason, families need to honor these special times when their being
together has meaning, comfort, joy, and love.

When your newborn or adopted child enters your home,
you want to gather your extended family and friends to present the
child as a new family member. Your baby blessing ceremony may include
Godparents (or “Guideparents”), blessings and wisdom from family
elders, and a formal naming ritual.

|

With a serious or lighthearted ceremony, you may
dedicate your new house or apartment. Your dedication ceremony is a
time to formally thank all those who helped you get there, declare
your wishes for your family life in the new space, and invoke the
spirits you believe in to bless you and your home.

A memorial service is a time for your family to
“celebrate” the life of a deceased loved one and tell that person’s
life story. A highly personalized secular funeral will help the family
express their love for the deceased and deal with their grief,
surrounded by family and friends.

The loss of a beloved pet is a sad time for
families, and it is helpful to formally acknowledge all the animal
meant to you. A formal ceremony at the burial site or in your home can
focus your thoughts on your loss and “celebrate” the gift of
companionship that your pet provided. |

“Rituals aren’t magic but they can certainly seem magical. Rituals
can ease a transition, inspire a new approach…, help heal the wounds,
or bond a family together.”
